Arts-Kids Expands to the Uintah and Ouray Reservation
In the fall of 2008 Arts-Kids, in partnership with St. Luke’s and St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Churches, brought the Arts-Kids model to the Northern Ute Tribe on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation in Whiterocks, Utah. Funding was from Running Strong for American Indian Youth, the Episcopal Church of Utah and the Utah Arts Council, Folk Arts Division.
We are thrilled to report that the response to our program exceeded our expectations. In fact, our sessions in the fall and spring of 08-09 were full. Tapping into the Tribal Community, our expressive arts “tool box” incorporates tribal artists, arts and traditions to help the Ute youth discover their talents, build their self-esteem and increase their sense of belonging.
In fall 2009 we contracted with the Ute Tribe to provide training to Recreation Department staff and others to facilitate the program throughout the Reservation. The programs begin January 2010. If you are interested in learning more about this wonderful program, please call 435-615-7878.
