Why is Arts-Kids important?
The after-school youth development program is based on the belief that all children will thrive if they have a safe place for self-expression, not always found at home, in school, or elsewhere in the community. During Arts-Kids sessions, children with diverse backgrounds, special challenges, and differing abilities come together in an atmosphere of trust. Arts-Kids’ trained facilitators are invested in eliminating the barriers of prejudice, fear, and stereotyping and in fostering respect, self-esteem, and understanding through communications skills. What do kids do in Arts-Kids?
The Arts-Kids groups begin and end with a “talking circle,” where each individual has a chance to speak
and be heard, and where a sense of community is encouraged. Professional artists present different forms of the expressive arts—painting, sculpture, dance, drama, poetry, music, etc.—designed to increase creativity and motivation. Trained facilitators and volunteers work with the children on a 1:3 ratio of adult

What are the expressive arts?
The “expressive arts” is an integrated process in which visual art, music, drama and movement are a vehicle for a child’s inner communication, self-awareness and healing. The expressive arts go beyond linear thinking and enable deeper expression of emotional feelings and thoughts. One child exclaimed, “Now I can express my feelings and no one needs to know what they are!”
Through the expressive arts, students learn problem solving, creative thinking, listening and communications skills. These abilities, which are transferable to the classroom and other life activities, can aid in reducing the risk of school dropout and juvenile delinquency. Return to top.
Who can benefit from Arts-Kids?
Arts-Kids children are those who can benefit from an alternative learning environment and social interaction with other children, who may be experiencing challenges or pressures in school or at home and need a positive outlet for expression, or who may have artistic abilities not being met in the traditional classroom. How much does it cost?
Our program is offered at no cost to our participants. The average cost of a ten-week group is $3,600. We do not receive financial support from the school districts but rely on private donations to fund our program. Return to top.
How are kids selected for Arts-Kids? Or How do I get my child in Arts-Kids?
Participants are selected by school guidance counselors along with parent and teacher recommendations. Return to top.
Where is the Arts-Kids program held?
All elementary and middle schools in Park City, South Summit, and North Summit School Districts. This after-school program meets once a week for ten weeks each semester.

When children gain motivation, self-esteem, and confidence as well as increase creativity, problem-solving, and communication skills, their academic performance is affected positively.
