To reach children while they are still open to learning
new ways of relating to their world
and to facilitate empathy and acceptance
of all people within a diverse society.
To provide a safe,
nurturing and diverse environment in which the creative spirit
within each
child can open and grow through experiencing the expressive arts.
Arts-Kids is a unique
10 week experiential program offered in a small group setting
to children
ages 8-15.
This setting creates an atmosphere of connection,
trust, and belonging across all boundaries while fostering better
communication and teamwork.
The Arts-Kids program is offered at no cost to the participants.
The purpose is to reach children while they are
still open to learning new ways of relating to their world.
The creative spirit is encouraged to open and grow.
The intention is to increase self-expression
and motivation through the expressive arts.
Children
are able to explore and experience many different art forms each 10-week
session.
Arts-Kids groups are held
in the spring and fall semesters.
Arts-Kids reaches over 400 children per year throughout all of Summit
County.
Groups are held in local schools and meet once
a week for 2-3 hours beginning immediately after school.
Arts-Kids groups is currently held in all six elementary
schools in Park City and Summit County as well as Ecker Hill International
School and North Summit Middle School.
Along side the group facilitator is an adult
volunteer for every 3 children.
Both facilitators and volunteers are provided special training
for the Arts-Kids program.
Every day at Arts-Kids begins and ends with a
talking circle.
Each voice is heard, and community is formed as children express
themselves, their "highs," "lows." and
"intentions" for their time in group.
Professional artists are guests each day and
present a different medium of expressive art - painting, drama, music,
poetry, clay and sculpture, dance, story-telling.
The artists work with the children, stressing the creative
process rather than the product.
Children reaffirm their intention for the day
and if they feel successful in achieving it in closing circle.
Children grow in their understanding that they can overcome an obstacle
or achieve a goal that they have set for themselves.
